About
DJs for DRC is a charity project aiming to provide relief in the war-torn Congo, open for all DJs and their fans worldwide, no matter how big or small, to take part. DJs for DRC wants to bring consciousness into the global electronic music scene, to prove that the nightlife industry can be about social justice as much as artistic expression and hedonism. Project founder Jay Haze believes that DJs are blessed to be able to travel the world playing the music they love, and they can make a small sacrifice like this to make a collective difference in the world.
Continuing the country’s history of instability and wars, and despite a peace agreement in 2006, the Congo’s east remains overwhelmed by rebel fighting, sexual violence, starvation and disease. The conflict remains largely ignored by the mainstream media. DJs for DRC is asking other compassionate DJs to choose any single DJ gig this year and donate 50% of their earnings toward the cause. Tiefschwarz, Loco Dice, DJ Sneak and Tiga have already pledged their alliance, and Jay hopes the list will increase exponentially. He himself will donate half his DJ fees from all DJ appearances from September through the end of 2009. By extension, any club or promoter who books Jay or another DJ for this project will be making a contribution.
The project kicked off with the release of Jay Haze’s Fabric47 mix compilation in July 2009. All his proceeds from the sales of the CD went toward UK-based Merlin which provides health care, medicine, treatment for rape victims and access to clean water for citizens in the DRC. Since the summer, Jay and his team have volunteered their time researching and communicating with Congo-based charities who are making a difference locally. The money collected from all the DJs will go toward these various organizations, with the DJs welcome to have a say in exactly where their money goes. Expect an announcement in 2010 about the results of the campaign.
You need not be a DJ to participate, though — anyone can buy the mix CD or make a direct donation toward Merlin (or other worthy causes) with just a few mouse clicks. The main point of this project is raising awareness of the conflict in the DRC. Spread the word and get involved!
